Final Video & Rejected Footage.

This is our final video Mumford and Sons - Awake my soul.

Our rejected footage has been attached to the end of our video , these are the shot and peices of video that we shot during our days with the camera , but decided not to use due to the poor quality of the shots , also some of the shots are not as we expected to look , as for example the shot of the actor sat on the wooden fence , we thought that this shot we could see the guitar and that this would add to the rustic and indie feel of the band as it looks like a tradional shot that the band would use. But we found that when we saw it in final cut Pro that infact you could not see the guitar and the shot was a bit to light and infact it was not as good as we first thought and indended , there are also a few more shot that we had decided not to use for many differnet reasons such as the shot may have been to light or may not have been the correct shot. these are some of the shots that we decided were not good enough to make it into our Video.

Creative Camera Use

In our Video we have used creative camera use , we have a few shots that are of particular intrest, As we have one that is a shot of the clouds through trees , we had this shot for about 5 minutes , we then sped this up so it makes it look as if the time is moving really fast , we also made sure it was at the time at which the sun went down so the shot got darker, we did this by using the FInal cut pro software on the apple computers, we used this to create all the effects that we created on our videos. this adds to the spooky and indie theme of our video, We also have alot of shot that have been slowed down , this is good as it makes the video look alot slower and more relaxed which again is some of the themes that we wanted to portray throughout our video. We also used Mulveys male gaze technique on some of the shots of the Girl in our video as we scanned from her feet upto her head , this makes the reader see in the eyes of the actors in the video.

Advert Flat plans

These are the flat plans that i created for my media Advert , I Chose this style of advert as i thought that it would go well with my Digipack and video that i have created , I think that the consistant theme of the folk and rural settings would be for the band , and are the same as previouse media peices created by this band. when i created these flat plans i took into account the colour and the way the photo is compared to tohers and I solved this problem by thinking that i would use the same colour that i used in my digipack so it will make again the themes coming through the whole peice of media.

This is our Call sheet it helped me and my group stay in contact with all the members of the group and the people seen in the video, this will make it easier for us to get hold of people like our tutor in case of an emergency.

Shooting Scrips

These are the shooting scripts we decided to use , for our final shot we have decided to use a wide angle to show the three of us walking away , this will be able to show us all in the frame and will show us all walking away together in one shot. also we have used shots like close ups to show the emotion of the performer and make sure the audiance can see the artist singing the lyrics, there is also a pivot shot , when one of the performers is walking past the camera and the camera pivots on the tripod this is a good shot to make it look as if the performer is walking further rather than just walk straight at the camera. There is also some wide angle shots of the performers which is good as it shows the establishing shot of the three performers . and helps to put astheic images in such as the trees and water.

Shooting Diarys

When filming on the 18th of january ,we started by getting the base shots done so of us walking through the trees and things like that. We found as this was our first time of fimling that the number of shot that we had to create was overwelming , this was why we extended our shoot to further days, when at the shoot on the first day the lighting settings on the camera was hard to set up at first but when on the shoot you have to learn fast so over time it became easier and easier . For this Stage of filming I was in main control of the camera. On our second shoot on the 25th of january we decided that this would when we can do most of the overall band shots , this meant we have to bring in guitars and the lyrics ot help us , this was a bit of a challenge to overcome the stage fright but again we got used to it. and our final shoot on the 1st of febuary which is when we did our shot with the girl , we found the leveling of the ground , due to the rain alot more challenging , but by adjusting the tripod this was soon sorted out . and agian on this shoot I acted as the director so I could again as much expreince with different jobs as possible here is a more accurate view of our days of filming:

Before our group started filming we wrote up a shooting schedule in order to keep organised when booking the equipment, finding when both cast and crew were free and to make the day of shooting run more efficiently. The shooting schedule also helped us to keep on track with the film.

Shooting schedule - 18th January 2011

1:30pm - Group meet at chosen location, collect camera and other props (Guitar)

1:45pm - Group arrive at shooting location (Forest)

1:50pm - 2:00pm - Prepare location and look for any potential safety hazards

2:05pm - 2:20pm - Crew set up and prepare the camera whilst the cast prepare for the shoot e.g. costume and props

2:30pm - 3:40pm - Begin shooting the base shots for our videos, these were the most simple, as they only included the band members roaming around the forest, and a few mid/long shots of the lead vocalist playing the guitar

3:40pm - Lunch break

4:00pm - Begin to shoot the lyrical verses, this meant a mix up of close ups and medium close ups/medium long shots as we wanted to capture the words coming out of my lips.

5:00pm - The weather really starts to darken, so we as a group decide to get one last shot, which was the water shot, the weather was perfect for making the water reflect.

5:30pm - Weather conditions, being too dark, force us to quit filming.

5:35pm - Review the days filming and plan a second day of filming.

(We knew we wouldn't be able to capture every shot, so we made a new date for where we used the woman in our video)

2:05pm - 2:20pm - Crew set up and prepare the camera whilst the cast prepare for the shoot e.g. costume and props

2:20pm - 4pm - Shoot all the band shots together, also the shots of us looking around the forest for the girl. Primarily long shots and medium long range shots used. This helped the forest interact and create a feeling of being 'lost'

4:25pm - Weather conditions, being too dark, force us to quit filming.

4:30pm - Review the days filming and plan a third day of filming.

1:50pm - 2:00pm - Prepare location and look for any potential safety hazards

2:05pm - 2:20pm - Crew set up and prepare the camera whilst the cast prepare for the shoot e.g. costume and props

2:30pm - 3:40pm All the shots of the mysterious, purity woman are filmed. This inculded shots of her walking round the forest, but also a close up of her singing the second verse of 'Awake My Soul' - this helped the audience see this womans real beauty.

4:00pm - All shots have been finished, we watch over all our tape and it looks like we've captured what we need and have all the shots we intended on having. We knew if we needed to change any little things, colours etc, then using Logic software we would be able to add effects.




Shooting Diaries - -


Within our filming we felt we kept sharp focus, kept the whole procedure safe and well regulated. This allowed us to get efficient and wanted footage. We had all the contact details of people involved, and also used health and safety procedures to make sure we kept a safe environment. We realised that shooting over different days would inevitably leave us with different weather situations, but we knew with the software 'Final cut' we could darken/lighten up areas of footage. We also made sure that we were wearing the same clothes each time of filming. No problems occurred throughout, which lead to a successful 3 separate days of

Mise - en - scene

In our video , the props are only very small and limitied as this is the simplistic style that we choose , There are two acoustic guitars in out video , these give the effect that the performers are playing the music live and to you the audience so will make them feel more in touch with the band , this is also in line with the style of music and the way the band plays the music with the guitars being acoustic , the genre of the music is folk and we have made sure that our rustic guitar are inline with this theme. The clothes that the band are wearing throught the video do not change , this is becuase the shooting was done in one day and we feel for the nature of our video would not be relivant. When picking each specific outfit we made sure that it looked similar if not the same as what some of the band themselves wear , for example brown tight trouseres and a grey hoodie is a standard wear for this artist. and is representative of the image of the band. The location of the bideo is in a wooded area , this area has been specifically choosen to go along side the themes of the video , as the video is based on a old rustic song and uses older instraments we tried to make the video have a old feel and through this decided on a woodland area as this will be correct for the style and ideas of this style of music. The colour of the video , we have made it so it is in a gloomy location with darker light image , this is to make it look a bit more mysterious and scary as this can go along side the themes of the video , and along side the darker lyrics of the song. we will not make and editorial changes to the coloour of our shot and will only use natural lighting.

Completed Advert

My advert is a mix of one of the original pictures i used with my Digipack , this will mean that the fans can make reference from the digipack to the advert when it is seen in shops or on television, The style of writing i have used is again the same as the digipack to and i will make sure this is consistant throughout the project , for me this makes it alot neater and smarter, I have also faded a picture of the bands faces into the photo to make the fans know what the artist looks like so they can find out who is behind the music, I also made sure i included the Website so that people can visit the site and potentially sell tickets to the tour blog's etc, and the fact it is an exculsive digipack and that it is avalible straight away , this will make sure the fans know they can get something more for there money.

From this part of the task i have gained skills in using Photoshop as I have learned to fade the photos and crop different images into the photo , this will be important in all aspects of media production, i have also learned how to edit the colours within photos so can help.

Adverts

The first Advert I am analysising is We are scientists , this band are very similar to the one that i am using in my digipack and advert so this is very relivant to what i will be creating, the simple picture of a man with his guitar gives the reader the image of what the music that they will be creating and what the album will be like , but the imge of the warewolf will also give the reader a certain twist on the normal mainstream music , so straight away you can see that this band is an alternative rock band. also with the colours used the red and orange this is quite an eye catching advert and with all the infomation written down the side of the picture the reader can understand all that they need to know. And with the review on the front as well the audience can see how good the album is , As it is a quote from a weel known rock magazine.

The second advert that i am analysing is Friendly Fires, this Is also in the same type of genre as my artist so again is relivant to the advert that i will be making. Straight away when you see this you notice the dark colour , this could tell me something about the style of music they play as it is a bit darker and mystic than the normal mainstream artists, also the slightly abstract photo on the front which is smashed can also be a catalst for me to belive that the music is slightly different to the mainstream pop. By having the tour dates on this advert as well it also lets the fans know when and where they are playing so they dont have to goto too much effort to understand more about the band, so can in a way make the fans more lazy as they dont need to find out about tours. Again the reviews from the main magazines and critics will again let the reader know how good the album is ( in other people opions) and how they feel about the album .

Completed Digipack

These the final peices i have created for my media Digipack i have decided to go for this rustic look as this is the main theme of the band and the music that they create, also the main picture of the band , i feel this is good as i think the pubic need to be able to understand and recognise the band apart. also the repetition of the album name is shown throughout the digipack i feel is appropriate as it needs to be pushed into peoples head so they do not forget the name of the band. The actual photos themselves reflect the band as they show pictures of the enviroment and nature and this is reflected by the names of there songs and the style of music they create , Through this task i have developed my skills within photoshop and this will come in handy when doing my advert and creating my Film, Also the editing the photos I feel i have gained knowledge and understanding of the programme and the editing of photos and the creation of a peice of work such as the one above.

Through Facebook I have had some feedback

Kris Flynn-Hutt - 20 -This is class, the colours blend well together and the song titles are very good too, edgy and ambiguous. It also looks very realistic with the inclusion of the record labels etc.

Ciara Snowball - 18 -I like it as it reminds me of Mumford and Sons and I like how the pictures have been edited to make them look almost x-ray but on the back maybe make the font of the song tracks a little whiter so its clearer :)

Health And Safety `

The health and safety within out video for us is paramount, from doing our shoot we have learned:we need to make sure people working with and for us are not exposed to risks to their health and safety

The way the camera is used needs to be in a safe way for example the way in which it is held needs to be good so people can still see what they are doing so they do not trip and fall,

Due to the fact it is in a wooded area the cast need to be careful in what they step on and make sure they have good footing so again dont trip and fall .

When using a vehicle and shooting part of the video , you need to be carfeul and strap yourself into the vehicle and the camera , this prevents the camera breaking and the people falling out .

When coming and going from the site in whcih we are filming people need to be carful with the equiptment and anything that could be potentially dangerouse on the shoot.

When near the water the cast and crew need to be careful not to fall in and be careful of the euiptment and props not to drop them in and then go in after them.

Some more health and safety :.


Camera Safety
Make sure the camera is securely attached to the tripod
When moving the camera, remove it from the tripod
Make sure the tape and battery are properly inserted into the camera
Personal Safety
Make sure there are no tripping hazards such as wires
Make it clear where emergency exits are
Keep all doors and windows clear in case of an emergency
Make sure there is sufficient filming space
If filming outside, be aware of other people
If working with special lights make sure you operate them properly

Edited photos for Digipack

For this photo i will be changing the colour to a darker browner style to fit with the rustic style of the band , i will also be cropping it so that the pictures will fit onto the page and will only show the two trees so the songs can bee seen to be in the middle as i think this will look very good.









This second photo i have already changed the colour and created a slight tint to the image , i feel this colour will be correct for the artist and the way the music feels in relation to the band, also with the band members being in the photo the outfits that they are weraing needed to be dulled down as there were lots of bright colour which werwe not right for the way the band sound.








The 3rd photo that i used in a photo that is of a bench within a garden , this is good for the band that i am using as in the music video they are using this bench to play some of there music , so it is relivant to the band , also the asthetics of the photo is good for the genre of our band , to this photo i am going to mark the image darker and give it a tint of brown, this will give it a more rustic feel and will go better with the band.

The 4th and final photo that i have used is of a small water feature , this will be also seen in the music video so will be more relivant, also again it is very good for the feel of the band , and the sound of the music , the way the photo will be editied will again be darkened and browned to fit in the with the way the other photos look.

analysis of my initial digipack ideas

This idea I think would be good due to the simplistic ideas that are used , but are also very good due to the fact that all of the band members are in the shots and with the quotes used in the Dvd page it can be seen as very proffesional and easy to understand, With the colours that are used they can be seen as the standard colours that are used in relation to this artist, but on the other hand this idea could be improved and there are a few reasons as to why i did not choose it for example , the idea are too simplistic , and the way it is set out is impratical and can be hard for some people to understand.

For my next idea I have used more elements from the style of band that I am using for example a key use of trees and this relates to the artists music and style. also The use of the waterfall and the way it relates again to the songs and how the band want to be viewed , also for the colours on this I would create a style that is not quite black and white but with a tinge of Brown, but again there are a few downsides to this idea too and reasons that i didnt use it , the fact that there is no pictures with all of the band in them means the public may not understand who the band are and what they are about, and the fact that there are very similar pictures means that there are a few ideas that look as if they have been repeated so would not look too original.

My third plan is, again mixing the idea of the band and the enviroment , which is one of my key Themes and one of the things that I am going to use for my final idea and eventual digipack, there are lots of good ideas within this idea and the fact that colours would be relivant and not in black and white can be key and the fact that i will need to make the pictures look very similar, but again there are lots of concepts that i dont like about this , for example the images are being copied over and over again will mean it does not look orginal and will look copied which means that I will want to change it and alter the way the pictures will look next to eachother.
